Shayne is a ten-year-old boy with a 140 IQ. He has two brothers. Shayne is also a champion swimmer and honored banjo player. Explain each concept and discuss how each may be applied to Shayne’s intelligence.
a. giftedness
b. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences
c. Heritability
d. WISC
e. Social influences of intelligence

In this case, Shayne can be classified as a gifted child because his IQ scores were exceptionally high for his age, and not only that, but he excels in athletics and music. The IQ test is an intelligence test that measures mental aptitudes. Furthermore his mental age is most likely not going to correspond with his chronological age, 10.  Mental age is a measure of the intelligence test. By looking at his high performance of all three areas, it can be concluded that his mental age is greater than 10. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences can be applied in Shayne’s case because his intelligence is not dominated by one ability, skill, or talent. His three assets can be categorized into Gardener’s eight intelligences. Shayne’s intelligences could fall under the logical-mathematical, musical, and bodily kinesthetic aptitudes.  Shayne’s intelligence/giftedness may be attributed to genetics/heritability. His two brothers may have also received the genes for high intelligence in multiple aptitudes. The WISC is another intelligence test built for children that contain both verbal and performance subtests. By assessing Shayne’s abilities and mental age, it can be predicted that he will exceed. There has been a correlation with people of high mental intelligence to be not able to socialize and communicate with others. This could also be true for Shayne. Also due to Shayne’s high mental intelligence, his emotional intelligence might not be as high because emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, understand, manage, and use emotions.
