A student remarked isn’t a child’s death horrible. Explain the cultural shift from useful to useless child and the moral justifications that come along to both sides.

· In the 17th and 18th centuries, there was high child mortality rate. For the first few years, children were often called “it” and they were economic assets. They were less likely to survive. The useful child’s value is economic. The useless child’s value is sentimental. In the 19th century, children became more sentimental and emotional assets. There was the sacralization of the child (useful → useless child). As sentimentality increases, their deaths become more tragic.

· Children were seen as idle, so an economic job could provide for the family. Later on, child labor was seen as exploitation because children could not stand up for themselves. This view was mostly in middle class as they had no hardships. The working class had it very difficult as children could not help provide for the family.

· The increase of sentimentalization is important. There was a revolution in child mourning that occurred because of cultural transformation in children’s value. When children were transformed to emotionally priceless assets, their deaths indicated both domestic misfortune and collective failure.
